This activity is designed for a national audience of multidisciplinary team members, including medical oncologists, community oncologists, pathologists, oncology pharmacists, health-system pharmacists, oncology nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, and other clinicians involved and/or interested in the therapeutic management of patients with thoracic malignancies.


Thoracic malignancies, including non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), small cell lung cancer (SCLC), and other cancers of the lung or bronchus, are the most commonly diagnosed cancers in the world. Lung cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosis in the United States, with nearly 229,000 new cases expected to be diagnosed in 2020. The overall 5-year relative survival rate is 20.5%, though survival is strongly influenced by disease stage at diagnosis. However, the therapeutic landscape of lung cancer is rapidly evolving and immunotherapy using immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) has greatly improved outcomes for many patients. New ICIs and ICI-based regimens and combinations are under investigation to improve efficacy and expand ICI use to patients with different histologies, treatment histories, and disease stages. The rapid progress and growing complexity within this field create a clinical conundrum for medical oncologists and thoracic oncology care teams to remain up to date on the latest research and advances in this area, and not all clinicians are fully aware of the clinical relevance of emerging data.

This webcast will prepare clinicians to select optimal concurrent or sequential ICI therapies for patients with NSCLC and SCLC with regards to disease stage, histological subtype, and other patient-specific characteristics. Improvements in treatment strategies will prevent drug resistance, mitigate AEs and improve patient outcomes.  


After participating in this activity, learners should be better able to:

  • Describe the rationale, accuracy, and practical considerations for targeting the PD-1/PD-L1 axis across various thoracic malignancies
  • Assess the efficacy and safety of new and emerging ICI agents and combinations from recent clinical trials
  • Use molecular profiling and patient-specific characteristics to develop personalized treatment strategies for patients with lung cancer
