ABSTRACT

Wound cleansing is an essential step in completing a wound dressing procedure. This simple action has been recommended for decades but the debate on how best to do the cleansing, with what solution, how and when to do so continues. This session will explore the debate on when to cleanse with an antiseptic and when normal saline or tap water is fine. Further explanation on the types of antiseptics available and how they work will be provided. The "how to cleanse and when to cleanse" will be provided and time to discuss real-life scenarios from the audience will be encouraged. Health care professionals providing care for individuals with chronic non-healing wounds will be familiar with wound bed preparation and therapeutic cleansing is key to good wound care and promotion of healing before and after debridement. Discussion will also be provided on the importance of periwound care and limb hygiene.
