Target Audience:
This activity has been developed for interventional cardiologists, clinical cardiologists, vascular surgeons, interventional
radiologists, wound care specialists, podiatrists, endocrinologists, vascular allied healthcare professionals, diabetes
educators, and primary care physicians.
Learning Objectives:
Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should
be able to:
• define peripheral arterial disease (PAD)
and critical limb ischemia (CLI) • identify the burden of PAD in the United States by gender and ethnicity • understand
the underlying diseases and lifestyle choices that contribute to the large burden of PAD • identify the consequences
associated with PAD and CLI • describe the changing paradigm of surgery to endovascular interventions • list
endovascular options in the CLI patient • identify the impact of comorbid conditions on treatment of these
patients • perform a differential diagnosis for nonhealing wounds • review the standard of care for these wounds and
the inclusion of advanced therapies • utilize timely and appropriate referral and multidisciplinary care for
patients • describe clinical trials underway with gene therapies and growth factors • discuss the role of angiogenesis
in PAD and CLI • identify autologous cell types and sources with potential for treatment of CLI • discuss clinical
trials using adult stem cells for CLI.
