Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, participants should be able to:
- discuss the efficacy of topical corticosteroids in treating atopic dermatitis
- review potential side effects such as telangiectasia and hypopigmentation that may occur with the use of topical corticosteroids
- assess the role of emollients in treating atopic dermatitis
- discuss the pros and cons of topical calcineurin inhibitors such as tacrolimus ointment and pimecrolimus cream
- determine the role of topical and/or oral antibiotics within the armamentarium of modalities for atopic dermatitis
- discuss indications for phototherapy in patients with atopic dermatitis
- review recent studies on the use of combination therapy in managing atopic dermatitis
- discuss recent studies on emerging agents that may have potential in treating moderate to severe atopic dermatitis
