Target Audience

This activity is designed for podiatrists, general surgeons, vascular surgeons, geriatric/internal medicine physicians and orthopedic surgeons.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the increasing prevalence of diabetes
  • Review current statistics on the complications of foot ulceration and lower extremity amputation in patients with diabetes
  • Review key principles such as infection control, debridement, facilitating granulation tissue and offloading in patients with diabetic foot ulcers
  • Determine when one should consider the use of advanced therapies for chronic DFUs
  • Explain the mechanism of negative pressure wound therapy as an adjunctive modality for DFUs
  • Describe the findings from studies on the use of bioengineered skin substitutes for diabetic foot ulcerations
  • Cite the current indications, contraindications and potential side effects for bioengineered skin substitutes
  • Assess the findings from studies on the uses of an allogenic matrix therapy, a dermal regeneration template and acellular dermal regeneration matrix to help facilitate healing of DFUs
  • Review the potential pros and cons of allogenic matrix therapy, a dermal regeneration template and acellular dermal regeneration matrix for DFUs
