Learning Objectives

• Differentiate the care of a diagnostic versus a percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) patient as
it relates to groin management
• Describe the hemostatic process
• Discuss the role of adjunctive pharmacology in PCI as it relates to post-case groin management
• Identify patient markers for high risk of bleeding
• Recognize common complications at the puncture site
• Evaluate patient anatomy prior to pulling a sheath
• Identify markers relating to a patient’s anticoagulated state
• Understand the various topical hemostatic patches available
• State the different devices used for mechanical compression
• Delineate between the main closure devices used today
• List the important factors to consider when evaluating the use of closure devices
• Recognize the importance of sterile technique when deploying a closure device.
